Dr. Valerie Dean O'Loughlin is Professor of Anatomy, Cell Biology, & Physiology at Indiana University School of Medicine–Bloomington, where she teaches human gross anatomy to medical students, basic human anatomy to undergraduates, and human anatomy for medical imaging evaluation to undergraduate and graduate students. She also teaches a graduate course in pedagogical methods in health sciences and mentors PhD students pursuing anatomy education research. She is a Fellow of the American Association for Anatomy (AAA), a President Emeritus of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), and currently serves on both the HAPS Steering Committee and the AAA Board of Directors. She has received the AAA Basmajian Award for excellence in teaching gross anatomy and outstanding accomplishments in scholarship in education, the AAA Henry Gray Distinguished Educator Award (2018), and the AAA Outstanding Mentor Award (2023). She also received the Scholar Educator Award from Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), which recognizes a single faculty member who approaches teaching through a schol¬arly lens. In 2023 she received the IUSM Inspirational Educator award. Valerie is a coauthor of two textbooks published by McGraw-Hill Education: O’Loughlin/Pennefather-O’Brien/McKinley, Human Anatomy, 2024 Release, and O’Loughlin/Bidle/McKinley, Anatomy & Physiology: An Integrative Approach, 2025 release.
